Is Amazon’s Mechanical Turk Worth The Effort? Let’s find out!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 10+ years, you’ve no doubt know of Amazon.com and the mammoth company they’ve become dominating a substantial part of transactions online for books sales initially and then from there expanded into many other markets.

They have an affiliate program available to for people wanting to create an extra income online for themselves, but many people may not be aware of another “work at home” program they have called Mechanical Turk (MTurk) .This program is used by half a million people in the U.S. and growing with no signs of slowing down.

 What is Amazon’s Mechanical Turk?

Mechanical Turk is a service provided by Amazon where you complete small tasks (They’re called Hits) in return for small payments from employers who are looking to get work done and have gone the route of crowd-sourcing with Amazon as their platform to get the work done.

In general, these various jobs are not high earners, but the idea is that the more you do, the more they all add up in the long run.

These tasks include:

  •  Filtering out inappropriate content on a given website.
  • Translate a paragraph from one language to another.
  • Find the proper spelling of these particular search terms.
  • Doing research for a particular topic.
  • Proofreading articles.
  • Many more tasks like these.Amazons mechanical turk

Most of these Hits payout measly numbers between 1c – 6c for jobs. As you can see already you
won’t be retiring early on this kind of payout, it reminds me of Swagbucks although when your Hits start to add up the overall payout can be much higher. From a personal standpoint, I think the payoff you receive for the time and energy you put in is for the most part just not worth it. You can be putting that time towards setting up your blog etc. working on something you have an interest in where the payoff is far greater in the long-run.

If you do decide to get started with MTurk, one thing I would say is for the first ten days focus on doing lots of small Hits to build up your history. A lot of requesters (the employers) will be giving the jobs only to people who get approved for a certain amount of Hits. Once you’ve achieved that number of Hits then the jobs you can go after are better-paying jobs from then on. Build up your history so the requesters know you’re taking the tasks seriously so you will receive better work.

Another tip is to take the tests that often allow you to take higher paying Hits, and they seemed to pay off by filtering out people who are not taking the tasks to serious by filling out any old junk and moving on to the next task as quickly as possible!

 PROS:

  • It’s very easy to set-up: Just head over to their website and go to “Make money on Hits”, set it up and it usually takes around 48 hours to get verified.
  • There’s not a lot of skill required: Most of the tasks are fairly straightforward and easy enough to work through hence the small payouts.
  • Get paid as soon as your job is approved: You can either spend your money on Amazon vouchers or if your bank account is attached to Amazon wait a few days, and you have it as cash in your bank account.
  • As much Hits as you could handle: Everyday more and more hits are being added, so you don’t ever have to worry about running out of work.

 CONS:

  • The Payout is incredibly small: The payouts are generally around 10c – 20c and if you were to get anything close to a dollar for a job that’s excellent… Under these circumstances anyway. As I was saying at the start, you have to ask yourself what the end goal is behind doing something like this and if there are better alternatives out there? It all comes down to what your goals are, though.
  • Don’t expect to be able to quit the day job doing this.
  • Low barrier to entry: For as big and well known Amazon is around the world there are a few con-artists who are getting people to complete their tasks but not approving the work, so people sometimes aren’t getting paid for the work they did which is wrong.
  • Amazon Turk is only available in the U.S.

 WHO IT IS FOR:

For anyone looking to make money for themselves, that will improve their life for the better I certainly don’t recommend Amazon Turk. Similar to Swagbucks when you think about people who are in call centers and jobs along those lines I think it’s a good fit because they’re stuck there for hours on the phone dealing with people. What better way to listen to people’s complaints and problems the by increasing your hourly wage even by a few extra dollars.

If you knew you would be in this situation working in a call center then doing this for many months while doing your current job would add up in a lot of extra dollars over the long haul. Just don’t let your supervisor catch you lol!!

 FINAL OPINION/VERDICT:

MTurk is certainly life changing, and you won’t be able to retire off of it, but that being said we’re all different and what works for one person may not suit another.By all means make up your mind, give it a go and see if it fits into your daily schedule in a good way!

For anyone looking for an opportunity to build a solid business online with far greater earning potential, allowing them to follow their passion and make money out of it in the process then look no further than my number one recommendation which is free to get started with and gives you everything you need to get going online!
